Don’t Get Zapped: Essential OSHA Standards for Extension Cord Safety

Electrical hazards are one of the most common safety violations Bailey Safety sees while preforming job site audits. Ensuring safety on job sites includes adhering to OSHA standards for extension cords, which play a crucial role in preventing electrical hazards. OSHA requires all extension cords used on construction sites to be grounded, three-wire types with proper insulation. Damaged cords, such as those with exposed wires or frayed insulation, must be removed from service immediately. OSHA also mandates the use of Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) for temporary wiring to protect workers from electrocution.

Additionally, cords must be protected from physical damage by routing them away from high-traffic areas, water, or sharp edges, and elevated when necessary. The average fine for an extension cord violation is up to $7,000 per incident. By following these guidelines, job sites can maintain compliance and safeguard workers against preventable electrical accidents. Stay Safe!!
